Title A Step Closer as Faulkner Returns to Winning Ways

The latest rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB took place this weekend at Knockhill Scotland where Irish driver Damien Faulkner continued his steady march towards retaining his title with a win and a second place.

Faulkner powered his SAS International car to a win in Saturday's race and followed up with a second place in very changeable conditions today (Sunday Sept 3rd) to increase his lead to more than forty points with just four races remaining.

Having been fastest in Testing and throughout most of the qualifying session, the Donegal man was just beaten to pole by championship rival Tim Harvey after a late change of tyres in the drying conditions gave the English racer the advantage.

With Harvey starting from pole Faulkner was handed an unexpected bonus at the start of the first race when his rival dived into the pits to change to slick tyres after the warm-up lap. Faulkner had spotted a dry line emerging on the wet track but elected to stay on his wet tyres which would prove to be the correct decision as he lead from lights to flag. The Team Parker with SAS driver had the attentions of James Pickford for the entire race but never looked in danger of losing the lead until the closing stages when Harvey's slick tyres began to work on the drying track bringing him back into contention. Faulkner held on however to record his third win of the year with Harvey only managing to make the final step of the podium.

Sunday's race also started on a wet track but this time there was no doubt that, for the front runners, wet tyres was the only way to go. Faulkner initially led but was immediately under pressure from Harvey who used his cars superior traction to just drive by the Irishman on the straight at the start of lap eleven. With Harvey having a stronger car for the conditions Faulkner was happy to pick up another podium finish and continue to close in on his second Porsche Carrera Cup GB title in a row.

"This was a very good weekend" said Faulkner after race two. "The conditions were made very difficult all weekend by the changing weather so I am really happy with the way things went. My aim was to get back to winning this weekend and I'm delighted to finally do that. We have just two race weekends to go and while there is still a lot of work to do we are now in a position where we could wrap up the championship at Brands Hatch in three weeks time and that's what we will all be aiming to do."

Rounds 17 & 18 of the 2006 Porsche Carrera Cup GB take place on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit on September 23rd & 24th.
